When Finlay was born we lived in a tiny flat where we didn’t have the luxury of setting up his own room. Squeezing a single mattress (US twin size) into our bedroom just wasn’t an option, so we bought a cot and removed the sides and legs to make a little bed next to ours. This worked well since our bed is quite low and once Finlay started crawling he would climb up into our bed for night feeds independently.
We tried to make the room as beautiful as possible despite the tiny space and a limited budget. This meant lots of thrifting and choosing carefully to include only the most beautiful and purposeful objects. In hindsight I would have secured the lamp cord at the very beginning… for safety as well as aesthetic reasons. It wasn’t long before Finlay started slithering and reaching so I had to re-think the lamp set-up! We found that the cot-sized mattress really was too small for our wriggly boy so next time around we will definitely start with a single-sized mattress (space permitting) from the beginning.
